Campus square redesign completed
Release and opening on 8 December 2017
The "Campusplatz redesign" section of the Chemnitz Model tram line, stage 2: Chemnitz - Thalheim extension, is nearing completion.
The campus square between the lecture theatre buildings and the canteen and student union on Reichenhainer Straße has been extensively redesigned over an area of approx. 10,500 m².
The newly constructed tram track crosses the future campus square in a central location. Barrier-free railway stops were built directly on the track, which are designed for both the City Link vehicles and the CVAG Variobahn trams. A new public transport interface between bus and train was also created at the new "Campusplatz" stop. When the rail and public transport services come into operation, a traffic-calmed area will be set up on the square as a 20 km/h zone.
Following the renewal and reorganisation of the underground infrastructure, around 7,500m2 of asphalt has been laid in recent weeks. The surface will be treated and brightened using a special process before the overall completion at the end of December. Until then, around 4,000m2 of stone slabs will also be laid as a surrounding square border (passe-partout).
In future, people with limited mobility will be able to use tactile and visually perceptible guide strips to find their way around the square. Furthermore, the conditions for the installation of a TU guidance and orientation system have already been created in the underground construction area. New and energy-efficient spotlights will ensure that the square is well lit in future.
In addition to the trees planted along the tracks, 60 new plane trees were also planted on the campus square. The design idea of the tree avenue has thus been transferred to the square. Groups of furniture - consisting of benches, city sofas and tables with awnings - will be installed to create a pleasant atmosphere. In addition, equipment such as bicycle stands and passenger shelters in a modern design will characterise the image of the square. These furnishings are to be installed by the end of January 2018 at the latest.
Construction work on the Chemnitz model and the redesign of the campus square began on 6 March 2017 with the aim of reducing the volume of traffic, improving pedestrian and cycle traffic and increasing the use of public transport.
The construction costs for the redesign of the campus square amount to around 3.2 million euros. Funding is being provided by the City of Chemnitz with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The ARGE Eurovia Verkehrsbau Union NL Leipzig/ Dresden and Wolff und Müller Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH & Co.KG Dresden were commissioned with the construction work.
