Call for participation in the 2024 Festival of Cultures

Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz from 14 to 29 September

Participation and co-design desired! The City of Chemnitz Migration Officer is once again calling on interested parties to take part in this year's Festival of Cultures and the Intercultural Weeks from 14 to 29 September 2024.

Anyone interested in participating in the opening and the subsequent two-week series of events can register their interest at www.chemnitz.de/ikw by 31 May 2024. Chemnitz residents who would like to support the opening ceremony as volunteers are also welcome to register.

On Saturday, 14 September at 12 noon, the Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz will be opened with a festival of cultures on the market square under the motto "ALL for Chemnitz - Chemnitz for ALL" by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze as patron. The Festival of Cultures aims to inspire visitors with a colourful and intercultural programme. Information, artistic and sporting activities as well as culinary offerings, stands and creative contributions can be registered in eight different themed areas.

In the subsequent Intercultural Weeks, Chemnitz residents will be invited by clubs, associations, institutions and organisations to find out more about the topics of migration, integration and asylum and to take advantage of offers for tolerant and peaceful coexistence.

"We are hoping for broad participation in the opening event and the subsequent series of events," says Etelka Kobuß, Migration Officer for the City of Chemnitz and main organiser in Chemnitz. "In recent years, the Festival of Cultures in particular has grown considerably, but there is still potential for it to grow. We look forward to receiving registrations from authorities and institutions, associations and initiatives that want to work towards a liveable and lovable Chemnitz for everyone."

For the series of events, the participants are free to decide what they would like to offer and in what form: Theatre performances, film screenings, dance classes and concerts, country evenings, sporting events, readings and author talks, training courses, lectures, workshops and information events on various topics as well as interfaith exchanges and much more are intended to spark interest in people and encounters. The variety of events on offer is intended to appeal to everyone in Chemnitz and encourage them to take part.

The Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz are prepared and implemented by the Migration Officer in close cooperation with the Migration Advisory Board, the Social Welfare Office, the AGIUA e. V. Migration Social and Youth Work Association, the Lila Villa Women's Centre in the akCente e. V. association and with the support of numerous Chemnitz associations and initiatives.

The nationwide Intercultural Weeks are widely recognised with 5,000 events at more than 500 locations throughout Germany. Chemnitz has regularly taken part in the series of events since 1991. As last year, the nationwide motto is "New Spaces".

"Creating, opening and showing new spaces - and also demanding, protecting and defending them. New spaces for encounters and exchange, for laughing together and reflecting together, for debate and coming together," say the organisers on the Ecumenical Preparatory Committee for Intercultural Week.
