Café Philo Chemnitz relaunches: What is democracy?
From 10 October 2017, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, together with the Free Institute for Education, invites you to continue the long-standing Café Philo at Weltecho, Annaberger Str. 24, cinema hall 1st floor.
This semester, the five-evening event series is dedicated to the topic of "What is democracy?". Interested citizens are invited to an open discussion. Admission is free.
Even and especially after the outcome of the Bundestag elections, fundamental questions of democracy are being asked again. Today, democracy appears to be the best of all possible forms of government.
But what is democracy and what features characterise it? What is the relationship between direct and representative democracy? Is there an alternative to representative democracy for complex societies? What role do the media play in this system as the "fourth" power?
All of these questions are becoming more urgent because the concept of democracy is being challenged and threatened by populists and extremists of all colours.
