Cactus show in the Botanical Garden
50 years of cactus friends in Chemnitz
On 4 and 5 June 2016, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Chemnitz cactus friends will be holding a large cactus show in the cold house of the Botanical Garden at Leipziger Straße 147 to mark the 50th anniversary of the local group.
The members of the Chemnitz cactus group will be presenting the most beautiful plants from their collections. Visitors can expect a sea of flowers in countless colours (except blue), shapes and sizes. To mark the club's anniversary, part of the exhibition is dedicated to the past fifty years of the club's history. The memorabilia on display is sure to awaken lost memories for some of you.
The exhibition shows how cacti can also be kept in the garden or outdoors in this part of the world. Visitors can obtain information on the care and keeping of cacti and other succulents directly from the experts on site. The cactus enthusiasts will be happy to answer any questions about the hobby.
After the tour of the exhibition, there will be an opportunity to purchase beautiful and rare plants directly from the growers in the large plant exchange. Refreshments will also be available.
Admission costs 2.50 euros for adults and 1.50 euros for concessions (for the severely disabled, schoolchildren and Chemnitz Pass holders); children of pre-school age are admitted free of charge.

50 years of cactus friends in Chemnitz
Exactly 50 years ago, enthusiastic cactus enthusiasts from Karl-Marx-Stadt organised themselves for the first time after the Second World War and founded the specialist group "Cacti and other succulents".
A lot has happened in these 50 years of the organisation's history. Founded as a specialised group in the Cultural Association of the GDR, the local section of the DKG (German Cactus Society) is active today, 26 years after reunification.
The central idea of the organisation - then (in the Kulturbund) as now - is the love of nature, plants and the protection of these endangered assets. Species conservation was already an issue in the 1960s and today it is more relevant than ever. The association also makes a contribution to species conservation. Be it in the communication of natural beauties in lectures at club evenings, the cultivation/propagation and thus the preservation of endangered plant species or the organisation of cactus shows and fairs to bring the hobby closer to many interested people. Guests are always welcome to attend club events and perhaps this year's cactus show will convince one or two people to join the Chemnitz Cactus Club.
