Bundestag election in Chemnitz

The Bundestag election will take place in Chemnitz on Sunday, 26 September 2021. Around 189,000 Chemnitz residents are being called upon to cast their vote to help decide the composition of the 20th German Bundestag for the next four years. The polling stations in the 143 electoral districts of Chemnitz will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election Sunday, after which the votes will be counted.

The 50 postal ballot boards will meet on election day at 3 p.m. to carry out the admission check and determine the postal ballot results at the Berufliches Schulzentrum für Technik I - Industrieschule -, Park der Opfer des Faschismus 1 and at the Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium, Park der Opfer des Faschismus 2.

Public presentation of the election results

The provisional Chemnitz election results will be presented to the public from 6 p.m. in the City Council Chamber in Chemnitz City Hall. As in previous elections, interested citizens, media representatives and representatives of parties and voters' associations will be able to follow the election results of the 193 Chemnitz general and postal ballot boards live on a large projection screen from 6 pm. Admission begins at 5 pm. In the town hall, it is compulsory to wear a face covering and to leave personal data for contact tracing. At the same time, the provisional election results will be published on the City of Chemnitz website at www.chemnitz.de.

Information on voting under the conditions of the corona pandemic

Due to the current corona pandemic situation, voters are asked to observe and comply with the following requirements of the hygiene protection concept in polling stations:

1. In the polling station and in any waiting areas in front of the polling station, the distancing rule (1.5 m distance between two people who do not belong to the same household) must be observed. Access to the polling station and the polling stations must be kept clear at all times.

2. Masks must be worn by all persons present (voters, members of the electoral boards, election observers, accompanying persons, etc.) while in the polling station and in the polling room. Persons with disabilities and those with health restrictions may, if they are unable to do so, refrain from wearing a face mask. This rule applies both during the voting process and during the ascertainment of results.

3. Hand sanitiser will be available for use by voters at the entrance to the polling station.

4. In order to minimise the risk of infection, voters should use their own biros when casting their vote.

The electoral board will regularly disinfect the surfaces of all tables, chairs and writing materials in the polling booths and ventilate the polling stations.

We ask for your understanding if there may be waiting times or delays due to the necessary protective measures in the polling station.

Postal voting and instant voting

Around 50,000 Chemnitz residents have already taken advantage of the option of postal voting or instant voting before 24 September 2021 (requested postal voting documents), around 23,300 of which were requested online. It is still possible to apply for postal voting documents and to vote immediately at the town hall until 6 pm on 24 September. The election letter must be returned to the city's postal voting centre by 6 pm on election day.

Public meeting of the district electoral committee

The district electoral committee for the Bundestag election will meet on 30 September 2021, 10 a.m., in the town hall, Stadtverordnetensaal for a public meeting to determine and establish the final result of the Bundestag election on 26 September 2021 in constituency 162 Chemnitz. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is admitted.
