Building Mayor Michael Stötzer will step down from his position as Mayor on 31 August 2025 and leave Chemnitz City Council at his own request to pursue new professional challenges. He has asked Lord Mayor Sven Schulze to dismiss him from his position on this date. The Lord Mayor will honour this request.
Michael Stötzer: "Eventful and busy years lie behind us. They have been years with serious challenges that had to be overcome, many successes and positive changes for our city. I am grateful that I was able to experience these fulfilling and happy years and make my contribution to Chemnitz. But now the time has come for me to make changes in my professional life and break new ground once again."
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "I very much regret Mayor Stötzer's decision. In him, we are losing a competent and highly committed head of department who has played a key role in shaping Chemnitz's urban development in recent years. Under his aegis, numerous new daycare centres and schools were built, sports construction projects were implemented and important decisions were made in the city's transport policy. Last but not least, the numerous intervention areas in the context of the Capital of Culture 2025 bear his signature. I also personally regret his departure from office. We started as mayor together in 2015 and have always maintained a trusting, solution-orientated and open collaboration. I wish him all the very best for the future."
Mayor Schulze will discuss the next steps with the parliamentary groups after the winter holidays in order to prepare for the election of the new head of the Department of Urban Development and Construction and an orderly transition in the department.
Background:
Michael Stötzer, born in 1972, had been Mayor and Head of Urban Development and Construction since 2015. He was confirmed in this office in 2022. Prior to this, he had been Head of Building Management and Structural Engineering since 2011. From 2009 to 2011, he headed the Building Construction Office, where he had been Head of Department and Deputy Head of Office since 2007. Until 2007, Stötzer, who graduated with a degree in architecture, worked in various architectural firms in Chemnitz.
