Building bridges to overcome borders

Project of the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz (LAP) completed

The "BUILDING BRIDGES TO CROSS BORDERS" project came to a provisional end on 10 September 2015 with a closing event. On this day, all participants and supporters of the three-month project came together for an intercultural buffet.

During the event, the responsible project staff from the youth vocational assistance programme discussed the past months of the project with representatives from the City of Chemnitz, the social services department, GGG Grundstücks- und Gebäudewirtschaftsgesellschaft mbH and Volksolidarität Chemnitz.

The highlight of the event was the handover of two football goals and a Viking chess game to the residents of Lützowstraße 32. These were made jointly by migrants and German young people in the workshops of Jugendberufshilfe Chemnitz gGmbH during the project and are intended as a sign of mutual appreciation and a welcoming culture.

"I am delighted with the positive response from young people from Chemnitz and asylum seekers. It was very moving to see how their personal experiences as refugees affected the young Germans in the workshops. I was also pleased with the support from the Kappel neighbourhood management," says project manager Bernhard Nieher.

The event was rounded off by a joint exchange of experiences on the project approach and future possibilities for continuing the "Building bridges to overcome borders" project as a meaningful and sustainable example of active integration work in the city of Chemnitz.

The "Building Bridges to Overcome Borders" project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the federal "Live Democracy" programme and the "Local Action Plan" of the city of Chemnitz.
