Bündnis Bunter Brühl receives prize in nationwide "Active for Democracy and Tolerance" competition
Mayor Ludwig presents prize to Chemnitz players - Invitation to award ceremony for eleven competition participants from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia Date: Thursday, 11 April, 5 p.m., Chemnitz City Hall/City Council Chamber
In the 2012 competition, the "Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance - against Extremism and Violence (BfDT)" selected a total of 67 initiatives and projects as award winners for their exemplary and worthy civil society commitment to democracy and tolerance. The prizes are endowed with between €2,000 and €5,000. From Chemnitz, the Bunter Brühl alliance will be honoured for its activities against the Thor Steinar shop "Tönsberg" in the Brühl district - the award will be presented by the Mayor of Chemnitz, Barbara Ludwig.
The Bunter Brühl alliance was founded at the beginning of March 2012 in response to a shop called "brevik", which sells the Thor Steinar fashion brand popular with right-wing extremists and whose name is strongly reminiscent of the right-wing extremist mass murderer Breivik. Since then, the alliance has been protesting against the shop in a neighbourhood that is set to become increasingly family and student-oriented with a variety of campaigns involving various stakeholders and addressing different target groups. The alliance is also committed to raising awareness among residents and educating them about the codes of the far-right scene.
Together with Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig, Monika Lazar, member of the German Bundestag and member of the BfDT advisory board, Prof. Dr Uwe Backes, member of the BfDT advisory board, and Dr Gregor Rosenthal, head of the BfDT's advisory board, will be present. Gregor Rosenthal, head of the BfDT office, will honour and present awards to the winners from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia at a public award ceremony in the City Council Chamber of Chemnitz City Hall. Following the award ceremony, there will be an opportunity to talk to the award winners and organisers at a reception.
