Brühl-Nord" redevelopment area cancelled
At its meeting today, the City Council decided to cancel the formal designation of the "Brühl-Nord" redevelopment area. This continues the gradual cancellation of the redevelopment areas in the city of Chemnitz.
The main development goals for the redevelopment area were to repair the buildings and improve the quality of living by designing the open spaces, creating parking spaces and taking measures to calm traffic. Structural and functional changes to the side street network were planned, which would lead to an improvement in the quality of living. The squares were to be revitalised by preserving and supplementing the building structure and by gutting the inner areas. Open spaces for public use should be improved or created.
Even before the definition and especially from this point onwards, numerous measures were carried out to realise the aforementioned redevelopment objectives without and with funding from the urban renewal and housing subsidies, in particular regulatory and construction measures. In addition to the clearing of plots and the construction of development facilities, these include the renovation of public and private buildings.
With the aim of eliminating serious urban development problems and facilitating new development, vacant buildings and unused commercial buildings were removed from the market through demolition and a large proportion were converted into attractive flats. The demolition of rear buildings in the heavily overbuilt Karree inner areas served to improve the quality of life and enhance the residential environment. The redesign and refurbishment of numerous streetscapes has improved the design and function of the public space in relation to the neighbouring buildings. In addition, the creation of the neighbourhood park on Blankenauer Strasse/Lohrstrasse on the initiative of a private developer and on his property improved the provision of green and open spaces in the area.
A total of 10.1 million euros from the urban renewal programme was used for the redevelopment area from the federal, state and city governments. In addition, funds from the housing subsidy programme and private capital were also used.
The "Brühl-Nord" redevelopment area has undergone many upgrades and the main redevelopment objectives have been achieved. The redevelopment area can therefore be cancelled. Until the beginning of 2016, there were eight redevelopment areas in Chemnitz, of which parts of the "Sonnenberg" and "Kaßberg" neighbourhoods had already been released from redevelopment due to their positive development in recent years. In May 2016, the formal designation for the "Augustusburger Straße/Clausstraße" area was completely cancelled. Since 1990, the "Brühl-Nord" area has been one of the focal points of urban development, which is why the city council decided to formally designate it in 1995.
