Brühl energy neighbourhood concept selected as model project
The Brühl neighbourhood concept was selected as one of 12 so-called representative projects from a total of 260 energy-related urban renewal projects funded by KfW Bank. These 12 projects are representative of the 260 concepts distributed throughout Germany. They are prioritised for exchange with the federal government and receive particularly intensive support in the accompanying research.
Together with the city of Chemnitz, eins energie in sachsen and Chemnitz University of Technology have developed an energy neighbourhood concept for the Brühl district, which envisages the large-scale use of renewable energies and the expansion of a low-temperature district heating network. The concept is being subsidised as a pilot project by the federal government and the Free State of Saxony.
Construction work to set up the district heating network began last year. By 2018, around eight million euros are to be invested in connection with urban development and energy efficiency upgrades. The implementation will be supported by the federal and state funding programme SOP - Brühl Boulevard.
By renovating the buildings as part of the energy-efficient neighbourhood concept, CO² emissions can be reduced by around 42 percent by 2020 compared to conventional types of heating - in the long term, a reduction of up to around 82 percent is even possible if additional renewable energies are fed into the district heating network. In addition, energy-efficient refurbishment concepts offer the opportunity of higher subsidies.
