Yesterday, the energy and urban development concept "Chemnitz - Brühl Boulevard" and its implementation with urban development funding was honoured as one of 18 climate districts by the Federal Ministry of Construction. The award-winning climate neighbourhoods were ultimately selected from 50 candidates by an expert advisory board and researched as examples of best practice. In fact sheets and a transfer workshop, the municipalities and experts worked out how climate protection and adaptation to climate change are implemented in practice in the neighbourhood. A climate neighbourhoods practice box is now available.
Chemnitz Brühl stands out with its low-temperature district heating network with a ten per cent feed-in of solar heat. Thanks to broad cooperation with the owners, Chemnitz University of Technology and the utility company eins with its network company inetz, an innovative network was combined with an energy-efficient refurbishment of the buildings and the neighbourhood was also upgraded in terms of urban development.
To this end, the city of Chemnitz, together with the Free State of Saxony, has broken new ground in the use of urban development funding. Chemnitz was also a sought-after practical partner in the European exchange on the heat transition of municipalities at the Franco-German Future Programme in September last year.
At the end of March, the City of Chemnitz will also represent the German municipalities with its recommendations for action in the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.
