Broadband expansion starts in April
At its meeting today, the city council decided to expand broadband in underserved neighbourhoods. The aim is to create a future-proof internet supply that enables faster internet access for residents, schools and small and medium-sized enterprises. The expansion will begin in April 2019 and should be completed by the end of 2020.
The broadband network will be expanded in the following districts in the northern part of the city: Altendorf, Borna-Heinersdorf, Glösa-Draisdorf, Furth, Rabenstein, Rottluff, Schloßchemnitz, Schönau, Stelzendorf and Wittgensdorf. The following areas in the southern urban area are included in the plan: Adelsberg, Berndorf, Einsiedel, Erfenschlag, Euba, Gablenz, Harthau, Hilbersdorf, Klaffenbach, Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain, Markersdorf, Reichenhain and Yorkgebiet. The assisted areas are the results of a market exploration procedure that identified the underserved districts.
The aim of the expansion is to provide all households, companies and schools in the areas with a bandwidth of at least 100 Mbits/second. In addition, all commercial Internet connections should be accessible at 1 Gbit/second. In view of the shortage of skilled labour, this will make the region more attractive and competitive. The total costs amount to 75.8 million euros and are being subsidised by the federal and state governments to the tune of 90%.
