Broadband expansion Chemnitz 2.0
PoP locations in outdoor areas for FTTB fibre optic network
In the period from Q3 2025 to Q4 2026, 23 central PoP locations (Point of Presence) and seven multifunctional cabinets (MFG Mini-PoP) will be set up outside the city centre for broadband expansion 2.0.
These are local technical centres, i.e. interfaces between the main cable network (wide area backbone) and the new access network (address network) to be created to the customer connection. In a fibre optic network, a PoP is the last "electrical point" in the network. This is where the fibres are assigned the light signals.
The total construction costs of around 4.81 million euros (gross) are being subsidised by the federal government and the Free State of Saxony. The company SysKom Kommunikationstechnik GmbH from Chemnitz has been commissioned to carry out the construction work.
The city of Chemnitz is building an FTTB fibre optic network (Fibre To The Building) to improve broadband coverage in Chemnitz. The addresses that are still underserved and could not be included in the first expansion stage in 2019 will be connected to the fibre optic network in expansion stage 2.0.
