Bridge over Wittgensdorfer Bach to be rebuilt
At its meeting today, the Chemnitz City Council decided to replace the bridge over the Wittgensdorfer Bach at the level of the residential property Marktsteig 2. The construction project is to be realised from July to December 2024. The total costs amount to 540,400 euros. They will be financed from municipal funds.
The existing structure connects the footpath running parallel to the southern bank of the stream and the residential properties at Marktsteig 2 and 4 to Untere Hauptstraße. The last main inspection of the bridge in 2020 found it to be in an unsatisfactory condition. A new inspection in 2023 confirmed this. The only possible load-bearing capacity of max. 1 tonne is also untenable in terms of the accessibility of the properties in the event of an emergency.
The new replacement bridge will be built 17 metres downstream. At the new location, there are favourable connection options for the footpath and the properties at Marktsteig 2 and 4 to Untere Hauptstraße. As with the previous bridge, the carriageway width will again be 4.50 metres.
A single-span reinforced concrete half-frame construction is planned for the new bridge. The gap between the retaining walls in the area of the old bridge abutment will be closed using prefabricated reinforced concrete elements, which will reduce the impact on traffic on Untere Hauptstraße (full closure required) during the construction work.
The embankment wall on the property side at Marktsteig 2 will also be replaced by a professional embankment support with embankment revetment. The right-hand bridge abutment will be set back into the embankment to ensure a favourable profile for medium flows. This allows the mean water to flow through the structure without changing the profile.
