Brand(t)current material effects at the 6th International Marianne Brandt Competition

The 6th International Marianne Brandt Competition is now in its sixteenth year and is organised by the art association VILLA ARTE e.V.. For the first time, it has a central theme: material effects.

In preparation for the competition, there is an open call for papers. Until

01 October 2015, all creative professionals are invited to submit texts on their material experiences. The 20 most interesting contributions will be published in the Marianne Brandt Competition book. The call documents are available at

to find.

The question of how materials characterise creative and artistic processes was a central theme of the Bauhaus preliminary course led by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers. Marianne Brandt attended this preliminary course in 1924. Her basic knowledge of materiality was applied in her designs for the metal workshop, which to this day are among the world's best achievements in product design and symbolise modernism.

From 1 October 2015 to 31 May 2016 , young designers and artists can submit their products, photographs and experimental arrangements on the subject of material effects. "The competition is not only a reminder of the product designer, but also of Brandt's lesser-known fields of work. The 6th International Marianne Brandt Competition is also committed to her aspiration to find poetry in the functional," says Linda Pense, curator of the competition.
