Box tree moths are controlled
Measures begin tomorrow on Schlossplatz and Theodor-Körner-Platz
Starting tomorrow, the Parks Department is expected to carry out measures on Schloßplatz and Theodor-Körner-Platz to combat the box tree moth, a small invasive butterfly.
Many parks in Chemnitz are also currently infested by the box tree moth.
To control the affected hedges and before replanting cleared areas, it is necessary to treat them with a biological spray agent whose active ingredient is produced by beneficial microorganisms. The Parks Department hopes to be able to combat the spread of the box tree moth as quickly and effectively as possible.
Around 280 square metres of boxwood hedges are affected and need to be treated by municipal employees. For health and safety reasons, the employees will work with protective equipment and pressure sprayers. Signs with warnings will be put up for the duration of the application. According to current knowledge, the biological spray agent used is harmless to four-legged friends.
The box tree moth is a small East Asian butterfly that has been introduced to Central Europe in the last 10 to 20 years and has developed into an invasive species. The caterpillars cause damage by feeding on box trees.
