Borna primary school moves into new building
After a construction period of around two years, pupils and teachers today moved into the newly renovated primary school building at Wittgensdorfer Straße 121a in Borna. Mayor Barbara Ludwig opened the building together with the headmaster of Borna primary school, Tilo Oeser.
The 10.3 million euro refurbishment has created modern conditions for primary school teaching in one of Germany's most important school monuments. With an open space of around 5.2 hectares, the outdoor area is very large compared to other two-form entry primary schools.
The school building has space for 142 children in eight classes (grades 1 to 4) and 32 pupils in two preparatory classes for ethnic German and foreign children. It has eleven modern classrooms, four separate after-school care rooms and four newly equipped specialist rooms for handicrafts, art, music and IT lessons. The classrooms have been equipped with new, flexible furniture in order to quickly create space for movement. The dining room, staff rooms and school administration offices have also been refurbished.
Borna Primary School is the first primary school in Chemnitz to have interactive whiteboards in all classrooms. The outdoor area will be completed in March 2019. Until then, pupils can continue to use the existing open spaces at the neighbouring old site.
Background to the building
Borna primary school is moving into the historic building of the former "Hindenburg School". The building, designed by Chemnitz city architect Fred Otto in 1929, was innovative for the time with its ground-level design and pavilion system. The tower was the only elevation and was built especially for local history lessons as it offered a view as far as the Ore Mountains. In the 1980s, the building was remodelled to make it accessible for the disabled and housed the school for the physically disabled, which moved to the Terra Nova Campus on Sonnenberg in 2016.
