Book Summer Saxony: Summer - Holidays - Reading Happiness

From Monday 26 June, Chemnitz City Library will be holding two summer reading events to inspire children and young people to read in the summer.

The much-anticipated Book Summer Saxony will once again take place in the central library in the TIETZ and the district libraries in the Vita Centre, in the Yorck area and in Einsiedel. Exclusively for all 10 to 16-year-olds, hundreds of titles from the latest children's and young adult literature are available to read: exciting thrillers, mystery and fantasy novels and cutting-edge stories about love and life.

Registration for the book summer is free and uncomplicated and does not require parental consent. Anyone who reads three books during the summer holidays will receive an invitation to the Book Summer closing party after the holidays as well as a certificate, which many German teachers reward with an A grade in the new school year.

At the same time, due to the great demand from the younger age group, the Summer Reading Happiness in Luggage project will be launched for the first time in the Central Library. Primary school children aged 6 to 10 can look forward to the latest summer reading and a little surprise. Borrowing is possible with a normal library card, which is free of charge for children and young people up to their 18th birthday.

The summer reading fun is rounded off by a varied programme of holiday events for children and young people.

The International Primary School Reading Survey (IGLU) revealed in 2021 that one in four children cannot read with meaning at the end of primary school. That's more than ever before.

Buchsommer Sachsen is a reading promotion initiative for young people organised by the public libraries in Saxony and the Saxony State Association of the German Library Association in cooperation with the State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism (SMWK) and the Chemnitz City Library Supporters' Association. This programme is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.

Holiday workshop "Programming robots"

In this workshop, children get to know the Dash educational robot and learn how to programme it themselves using an app. They will be able to try out obstacle courses and various light and sound effects.

Frauke Angel, actress and award-winning author from Dresden, and Chemnitz-based illustrator Stephanie Brittnacher tell the humorous story of mum Schmitz's strike from the son's point of view in "Geht ab wie Schmitz' Katze".

"HEUL DOCH!" - Frauke Angel presents her non-fiction picture book about howling, whinging, crying and blubbering

Almost everyone does it, all over the world: howling, whinging, crying and blubbering. The reasons for this are varied and individual. But why do we actually cry? And where do tears come from anyway? Can animals cry? Do all people cry the same amount? And why do tears taste salty? In their search for answers, the duo Frauke Angel/ Stephanie Brittnacher explore the tears of an extended family. And there really is a lot of crying!
