"Book Summer Saxony" starts on 14 June 2016 at Chemnitz City Library
Go into the summer holidays relaxed with a book and improve your German grade
On Tuesday, 14 June 2016 at 10 a.m., the holiday campaign "Buchsommer Sachsen - Beim Lesen tauch' ich ab!" (Book Summer Saxony - I dive into reading!) starts at Chemnitz City Library. Around two weeks before the summer holidays, 500 brand new books will be available to borrow free of charge for all 11 to 16-year-olds with a thirst for reading.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to a press and photo session on the occasion of the book summer opening on 14 June 2016, 9 a.m. at Chemnitz City Library in the TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. Together with pupils from Annen-Oberschule, the library will be presenting the "Buchsommer Sachsen" holiday campaign and will be available for questions and interviews.
Children and young people taking part in the book summer can register for the book summer's reading club free of charge, easily and without a parent's signature. Whether fantasy novels, love stories, funny comic novels, adventures or mysteries - with a club card, books can be borrowed from the central library in the TIETZ and the branches in the Vita-Center, Yorckgebiet and Einsiedel until 6 August 2016.
Holiday fun that's worth it! Pupils who have read three club books by the end of the holidays will receive a certificate attesting to their reading skills. The certificate is signed by the Director of Chemnitz City Library and the Head of the Chemnitz Regional Office of the Saxon Education Agency. Many schools honour the certificate by allowing pupils to improve their German grades. From Year 8 onwards, the certificate can be added to the application portfolio. The certificates will be presented at a graduation party on 26 August 2016 at Club Atomino.
With its original American roots, the Book Summer has been run as a nationwide project since 2012 and is aimed in particular at young people who have previously had few leisure activities or who have limited opportunities to spend their summer holidays due to their social situation. The focus is on stimulating a love of reading and encouraging voluntary, self-directed reading among schoolchildren in their free time.
In 2016, 91 Saxon libraries are taking part in the successful summer holiday campaign. In 2015, 447 children and young people took part in the holiday campaign and borrowed 1785 books.
"Buchsommer Sachsen" is centrally organised by the German Library Association (Deutscher Bibliotheksverband e. V., Landesverband Sachsen) and sponsored by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts. The patron is the Saxon State Minister for Culture, Mrs Brunhild Kurth. The Chemnitz City Library Supporters' Association is supporting the project this year with 1,000 euros.
