Blue-green algae detected in the castle pond
The castle pond is not a bathing water - bathing for humans and animals is not permitted
Blue-green algae were detected in the castle pond during the latest water quality check. Blue-green algae form toxic degradation products that can lead to health problems in animals, e.g. bathing dogs. As the castle pond is not a bathing water, there is initially no risk to humans.
However, it is expressly pointed out that bathing for people and animals is not permitted there and may currently be associated with health risks.
This also includes the risk of blue-green algae being carried into other bodies of water by dogs bathing in the castle pond. This should be avoided as a matter of urgency.
Since the beginning of July, the greenish, shimmering colour of the castle pond has become increasingly pronounced. Heat and sun provide good conditions for algae. They are in high season from mid to late August and the current weather conditions favour algae growth.
The Parks Department therefore monitors the water quality on an ongoing basis.
