Big stage for the Olympians
Welcoming the Olympic participants and opening of the Chemnitz City Festival on stage on the market square, Friday, 26 August, 7 p.m.
The Olympic participants from Chemnitz in Rio de Janeiro will be welcomed tomorrow, Friday, 7 pm, on the big stage on the market square by the Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. The athletes' achievements will be ceremoniously honoured. They will then talk about their competitions in a panel discussion.
Expected are:
- Gymnast Sophie Scheder from TuS Altendorf , who won bronze in uneven bars and came 6th in team gymnastics, and her coach Gabi Frehse,
- shot putter Christina Schwanitz from LV 90 Erzgebirge e.V., who came 6th in Rio and won gold at the European Championships in Amsterdam,
- Athlete Max Heß, from LAC Erdgas Chemnitz e.V., who also won gold in the triple jump at the European Championships in Amsterdam,
- Track sprinter Joachim Eilers from Chemnitzer Polizeisportverein e.V., who took home 4th place in the keirin, 5th place in the sprint and 5th place in the team sprint,
- Sprinter Rebekka Haase from LV 90 Erzgebirge e.V., who won 4th place with the 4x100 metre relay team in Rio and bronze with the relay team in Amsterdam,
- Gymnast Pauline Schäfer from TuS Chemnitz-Altendorf, who achieved 6th place with her team in team gymnastics,
- triple jumper Kristin Gierisch from LAC Erdgas Chemnitz e.V. who took 8th place at the European Championships in Amsterdam.
The event will be followed by an autograph session with the Olympians. All Chemnitz residents are cordially invited to attend the welcome and congratulate the Olympians on their achievements.
At around 7.30 pm, Mayor Barbara Ludwig will then open the Chemnitz City Festival, which will once again attract numerous visitors to the city centre this weekend with many programme highlights.
