Biblia latina awarded
Oldest book in Chemnitz City Library on loan from the exhibition "Language - World of Words, Signs and Gestures" at the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden
Chemnitz City Library is making its oldest and most valuable book, the "Biblia latina", available on loan for the special exhibition "Language - World of Words, Signs, Gestures" taking place at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden from 24 September 2016 to 20 August 2017.
The "Biblia latina" marks the beginning of the presentation of various books that illustrate the opening up of education over the centuries in our culture. Produced for university teaching at the University of Paris and completed in 1277, the Bible is representative of the Middle Ages, a time when education and knowledge were exclusive and reserved for only a few people.
The parchment manuscript is a complete Bible containing the Old and New Testaments on 375 pages. Its bibliophile beauty is due to the tiny pearl script and the historiated miniatures and magnificent initials that precede all parts of the text.
The special exhibition "Language" sensitises the public to the creative power of language and its cultural, intellectual and everyday practical richness. Spoken or written, touched or in sign language - language plays a central role in human self-understanding.
The exhibition shows cultural and scientific historical exhibits and documents, films and contemporary works of art. Numerous interactive elements invite visitors to playfully explore linguistic phenomena.
The exhibition at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum was conceived in co-operation with the German Academy for Language and Poetry. It is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Cultural Foundation of the Federal States, the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony and the Free State of Saxony as part of the action plan for implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
