Bergstraße leisure centre in Chemnitz-Grüna under construction
Construction of the Capital of Culture intervention area begins on 25 June
On Tuesday, 25 June, work will begin on the new leisure area on Bergstraße in Chemnitz-Grüna.
The leisure area on Bergstraße is the intervention area of the cultural capital of Chemnitz-Grüna. Taking nature conservation into account, the green spaces on Bergstraße are being upgraded and supplemented with structural functions.
A public square is being created - a place to meet, socialise, experience and enjoy. In future, a variety of recreational areas, a multifunctional square with a stage and a walkway with an adjoining pond terrace will invite all age groups to linger.
A new pump track and play equipment will be integrated into an additional square area. A footpath and cycle path connects all areas of the leisure centre.
The intervention area will be integrated into the surroundings with a variety of trees, shrubs and perennials.
The leisure area will also provide a rest stop for the future premium cycle path on the old Wüstenbrand - Küchwald railway line.
Before the construction site is set up, an amphibian protection fence will be erected.
The construction costs amount to around 375,000 euros, including municipal funds for tree planting.
The work will be carried out by the company Baumschule Hohenstein-Ernstthal GmbH. Construction supervision is being carried out by the planning office Jacob + Bilz Landschaftsarchitekten PartnerschaftsG mbB.
Background:
The public squares are the result of intensive participation by the people in the neighbourhoods and localities. The stakeholders from the city's neighbourhoods have put a lot of thought into the project and, together with their citizens, have selected a public space that is to be redesigned as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Each of the eight areas of the citizens' platforms and each of the eight incorporated localities will receive a maximum of 325,000 euros. For example, a pavilion in Küchwald, a rest area on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path, a themed circular hiking trail around the village of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain and a lift at Wittgensdorf primary school have been implemented, creating a barrier-free event space in the assembly hall.
The public squares are one of the 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. They are the city of Chemnitz's urban development project for the Capital of Culture, which now involves an investment of over 60 million euros.
