Bavarian access to the snow goats
Chemnitz Zoo has two new additions: two snow goats named Nala and Lucy. Both were born in Augsburg Zoo in May 2014 and have now moved into their new home in Chemnitz. They live in the enclosure next to the ibexes and are currently still separated from the other two snow goats, who will also move there later. The zoo now has one snow goat and three females.
Chemnitz Zoo has been keeping and breeding snow goats for many years. As these animals are only kept in a few zoos, Chemnitz Zoo has organised an animal exchange with Augsburg Zoo. The aim is to be able to breed with unrelated animals from different zoos. The buck already living in Chemnitz comes from Tierpark Berlin and an older female from Colchester Zoo. A young female, also from Tierpark Berlin, was recently transferred to Augsburg, from where the two young females have now travelled to Chemnitz.
About the snow goats: This species inhabits steep rocky slopes and cliffs in the alpine regions of North America and is a relative of the European chamois. The dense winter coat protects them from the climatic conditions. Snow goats have hardly any natural enemies, as they are extremely strong with their short, very pointed and curved horns.
