Bat Night at the Castle Pond
Invitation to an excursion: 4 September, 7 pm, meeting point at the ‘Milchhäuschen’ café
On Friday 4 September at 7.00 pm, anyone interested is invited to join an excursion to explore the nocturnal world of bats. The meeting point is the footpath by the ‘Milchhäuschen’ café, Schloßteichstraße 20. Participation is free of charge. The guided tour, which lasts around two hours, is also suitable for families with children.
During an evening tour, Dr Gudrun Schneider from the Chemnitz City Environment Agency, volunteer bat expert Holger Tippmann and the team from the Young Nature Guardians Chemnitz (BUND) will share interesting facts about the characteristics, way of life and conservation of these flying mammals.
As dusk falls, hunting bats can be observed in the immediate vicinity. A detector is used to make the bats’ ultrasonic calls audible.
Bats are fascinating creatures: they ‘see’ with their ears and fly with their hands. However, there are still many misconceptions about this group of animals, even though very few people have ever seen a bat up close.
