Basketball court in Konkordiapark gets a vinyl surface
Installation work begins on 19 September
The installation of the special vinyl surface on the two basketball courts in Konkordiapark will begin on Thursday, 19 September. A surface of this type has not yet been installed in Chemnitz in the outdoor area. It allows the two surfaces to be covered with motifs specially designed for Konkordiapark.
In June, work began on the construction of an additional basketball court in Konkordiapark. The new court is being built in accordance with the requirements of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) so that international tournaments can also be organised. The existing court will be moved slightly and also renovated.
A grandstand for up to 80 spectators will be built next to the new basketball court. The existing, shifted pitch will be enclosed by four metre high ball catch fences.
Both pitches will each be equipped with a lighting mast so that they can also be used in the evening. An existing concrete lounger will be reinstalled for resting. Eight bicycle racks, two additional benches in the area of the existing pitch and six litter bins will also be installed on the site.
A public drinking fountain will be positioned so that it is easily accessible for both the new playing field areas and the existing Konkordiapark.
The paths to the two playing fields and the areas around them will be paved with concrete paving. Two raised beds will be planted to break up the areas.
In order to maintain the space for the two playing fields, it was necessary to cut down eight trees before construction began in February of this year. Eight new trees and 26 shrubs will be planted to replace them.
The work is being carried out by the construction company Phönix-Bau GmbH from Aue. Construction supervision is being carried out by sLandArt Stefan Leiste Landschaftsarchitektur bdla, Chemnitz. Completion is planned for the end of the year. The construction costs total approx. 900,000 euros.
The project is being subsidised by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts. This measure is co-financed by tax revenue on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
Background
The new basketball court in Konkordiapark is a measure that has emerged from civic engagement and is being supported and realised by the City of Chemnitz.
Inspired by the numerous measures in preparation for the European Capital of Culture 2025, great importance is attached to artistic design in the realisation of the basketball court and the measure thus contributes to the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
The project is being financed by the City of Chemnitz itself, but also to a large extent by state funds from the Free State of Saxony. Members of the Chemnitz state parliament lobbied for the funding in Dresden so that funds totalling 800,000 euros could be called up from the Free State of Saxony for this project, which is closely linked to the European Capital of Culture title.
