Bank retaining wall to the Würschnitz in Harthau is being renewed
At its meeting today, the city council approved the replacement construction of a bank retaining wall to the Würschnitz in Klaffenbacher Straße in Harthau.
The City of Chemnitz's Transport and Civil Engineering Department is planning to replace the retaining wall on Klaffenbacher Straße above the "Blaues Wunder" city railway bridge in Harthau. The structure supports Klaffenbacher Straße opposite the Würschnitz. Not least due to its advanced age, the retaining wall has been further damaged by past flood events. There are break-outs in the bank wall, joints have been washed out and the masonry has loosened. The foundation of the retaining wall is neither frost-proof nor resistant to undermining. In the event of further flooding, there is a risk of it collapsing and damaging the still damage-free infrastructure in the back. Due to the extent of the damage, repair is no longer sensible or economical. A new replacement structure is therefore planned.
Due to the subsoil conditions and local circumstances, the new bank retaining wall will be constructed as an angled retaining wall made of reinforced concrete with a greatly reduced footprint. To ensure stability, the comparatively small foundation will be anchored in the ground with micropiles. The new bank retaining wall has a length of approx. 50 metres and the visible height varies between 3.35 and 3.85 metres.
Construction is expected to take eight months from April to December 2024. During the construction period, road traffic can be channelled past the construction site on one side with traffic lights. Around 1.3 million euros will be invested in the construction project.
