Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße junction completed
Traffic can flow again without restrictions in the course of this week
The remodelling of the Bahnhofstraße/Zschopauer Straße junction will be completed this week. The road is expected to be opened to traffic on Thursday, 22 June, which is a good week earlier than announced.
The coordinated construction project between the City of Chemnitz, the waste disposal company ESC and inetz/eins began in 2021.
This complex project involved adapting the geometry of one of the main junctions in Chemnitz's transport network to the requirements of urban development (particularly in connection with the Neue Johannisvorstadt development site).
Special attention was paid to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. The footpaths and cycle paths have a width appropriate to the city centre, the pedestrian crossings on Bahnhofstrasse and Zschopauer Strasse have been significantly widened and the gaps in the cycle path network on Zschopauer Strasse have been closed.
The traffic lights on Bahnhofstrasse/Zschopauer Strasse have also been optimised so that Bahnhofstrasse can be crossed in one go at the western pedestrian/cycle crossing and bus and rail traffic are given priority.
The new traffic lights on Zschopauer Straße/Moritzstraße have also made the junction much safer for all road users and the bus stops on Bahnhofstraße and Zschopauer Straße have been renovated or made barrier-free.
In addition to the complete media technology development and site clearance of the large construction sites in Johannisvorstadt, the area surrounding the new eins administration building on Johannisstrasse was also completely redesigned and modernised.
The project was delayed due to the unexpected need to remove heavily contaminated soil that was found at a depth of around 4.5 metres when digging the trench for the sewer construction. The war in Ukraine also had an aggravating effect on the construction project.
The tree planting on Bahnhofstrasse is planned for autumn 2023 in the direction of the train station, depending on the season. The planting work there will be completed once the development on the corner of Bahnhofstrasse and Augustusburger Strasse is finished. Trees will also be planted on both sides of Zschopauer Straße and in the central reservation, which will also be planted in autumn 2023.
