Award-winning film spot celebrates premiere at Chemnitz Film Nights on the theatre square

Invitation to the 2013 competition for the citizens' film prize Sukuma Award - Chemnitz - Participation with ideas for a film spot on the topic of money until 31 July 2013

The first winner of the Sukuma Award - Chemnitz Citizens' Film Prize will premiere in front of a large audience at the Chemnitz Film Nights on Theaterplatz on Thursday (4 July): "The (almost) naked truth about uniforms" will be screened.

The author of the film spot, which won its first award last year, is 27-year-old Manuela Baumann from Marienberg, with prominent singer Clueso responsible for the music. Using the example of the everyday working lives of exploited seamstresses in Macedonia, who also produce workwear purchased in Saxony, the advert addresses issues of sustainability, ecological standards and, last but not least, human rights. At the same time, it draws attention to the fact that it is often complicated, even for committed local authorities such as Chemnitz, to participate in opportunities that are committed to the principles of fair procurement.

Manfred Hastedt, Head of the Environmental Centre of the City of Chemnitz, which also supports the Citizens' Film Prize, explains: "As part of the Agenda 21 programme, the City of Chemnitz is now promoting a Citizens' Film Prize for more sustainability with the help of a competition, following the initial very successful Chemnitz Coffee and Chemnitz Chocolate projects. As early as 2008, the City of Chemnitz committed itself to avoiding products from exploitative child labour and has actively worked to ensure that the core labour standards of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) are implemented in procurement, for example. There are also control options for clothing, such as the Fair Wear Foundation and the Fair Labour Association. Corresponding further training on various product groups took place with the support of the Sachsen kauft Fair! campaign and the Environmental Centre."

The citizens' film prize Sukuma Award - Chemnitz is sponsored by the Saxon association Sukuma arts together with the Chemnitz association Informationszentrum WELT-Laden, the Chemnitz Environmental Centre and Agenda 21 Chemnitz. According to Manfred Hastedt, the aim of the film award is to interest and activate citizens in the topic of global sustainability. Once again in 2013, people are invited to submit a film spot idea for the Sukuma Award - Chemnitz. The best ideas on the topic of sustainability, described on one A4 page, will be produced with prominent artists and broadcast in the city's cinemas. This year's film, entitled "Do you know your bank secret?", deals with the topic of money. The closing date for entries is 31 July 2013 and the realisation of the award-winning film spot is supported by partners and networks and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the North-South Bridges Foundation.
