Award of the Chemnitz Peace Prize 2021
Proposals requested by 18 January 2021
This is the 18th time that the Chemnitz Peace Prize - a civic award in which the citizens of the city select the winners from among themselves - has been awarded. The award ceremony takes place in the context of the Chemnitz Peace Day, which commemorates the destruction of the city of Chemnitz on 5 March 1945 as a result of Germany's inhumane, hostile policies and the war it started.
History must not be allowed to repeat itself and for this we need the commitment of everyone.
The award is given to individuals, organisations, projects and initiatives that
- stand up for fundamental values such as tolerance and democracy,
- consider the integration of different cultures to be an essential part of our coexistence,
- take a stand against all forms of marginalisation, xenophobia and racism,
- actively work for peace,
- promote and support non-violent coexistence.
It is about civic, voluntary commitment in addition to the organisations whose main task is to ensure social peace in Chemnitz.
For the organisers, the citizens' association FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. and the migration officer of the city of Chemnitz, it is important that this commitment is designed to be sustainable.
The sculpture by sculptor Erik Neukirchner will be awarded the 1st prize and the occasional prize of honour for special services to peace in the city. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes each come with prize money (1st prize: 500 euros; 2nd prize: 300 euros and 3rd prize: 200 euros).
In 2020, an additional prize for children and young people and their projects was awarded for the first time (300 euros).
All Chemnitz residents, associations and initiatives are hereby invited to nominate suitable people and projects. Self-applications are also possible. Members of the jury will examine the proposals, visit them and present them to the jury.
The closing date for applications is 18 January 2021.

Chemnitz Peace Prize Winner 2020
On 4 March 2020, on the eve of the Chemnitz Peace Day, the 17th Chemnitz Peace Prize was awarded in the town hall, along with an honorary prize and, for the first time, a children's and youth prize. First place was awarded to the PERLA visiting service project in the red light district in Chemnitz. Other prize winners are the Chemnitzer Bürgerfest e. V. association and the magazine HORIZONT. The honorary prize was awarded to Dr Hans Brenner and the children's and youth prize to the theatre team from Einsiedel Grammar School.
