Award of the 21st Chemnitz Peace Prize
Proposals can be submitted until 15 January 2024
The Chemnitz Peace Prize will be awarded for the 21st time next year. With this civil society prize, the citizens of the city select the winners from among themselves. Proposals can be submitted now. The deadline for applications is 15 January 2024.
All Chemnitz residents, associations and initiatives can nominate suitable people and projects. Self-applications are also possible. Proposals and applications should include a justification. Members of the jury will review the proposals, visit them and present them to the jury.
The Chemnitz Peace Prize has been awarded annually since 2004 by the City of Chemnitz Migration Commissioner and the FUER CHEMNITZ e. V. citizens' association in the run-up to the Chemnitz Peace Day. Next year, the award ceremony is expected to take place on 1 March 2024.
Every year on 5 March, the inhumane, hostile policies of fascist Germany, the victims of the war it unleashed and the destruction of the city of Chemnitz in 1945 are commemorated on Peace Day in Chemnitz. The Chemnitz Peace Prize is intended to build on this and promote greater commitment to peace.
It honours people, organisations, projects and initiatives that work voluntarily and sustainably
- stand up for basic values such as tolerance and democracy,
- consider the integration of different cultures to be an essential part of our coexistence,
- take a stand against all forms of marginalisation, xenophobia and racism,
- actively work for peace and
- promote and support non-violent coexistence and
- are role models in their commitment to peace and justice.
The jury of the Chemnitz Peace Prize - made up of personalities from politics, society, the church, culture, business and administration - selects the prize winners from a large number of committed individuals.
The 1st prize, as well as the only occasionally awarded honour prize for special services to peace in the city, receive the sculpture "Chemnitz Peace Prize" by sculptor Erik Neukirchner. The winners also receive a cash prize (1st prize: 500 euros; 2nd prize: 300 euros and 3rd prize: 200 euros). The prize for children and young people and their projects is endowed with 300 euros.
