Award ceremony: Lifesaving badge of honour for Norbert Kindt and Witali Giesbrecht
Invitation for media representatives for Monday, 30 May, 5 p.m., Grüner Salon
Chemnitz police officers Norbert Kindt and Witali Giesbrecht will be awarded the Lifesaving Medal of the Free State of Saxony next Monday, 30 May at 5 p.m. by Mayor Barbara Ludwig on behalf of Minister of State Markus Ulbig. The men will be honoured for evacuating a burning residential building in Altendorfer Straße in February.
Flashback: In February 2016, the two police officers risked their lives to evacuate the residents of a burning apartment block in Altendorfer Straße. The emergency services were alerted by local resident Julian Deutschendorf, who also aroused some of the residents from their sleep with his dedicated actions and thus saved them from worse. When the officers arrived, they realised that the front of the house was on fire. After calling for reinforcements, they tried to rouse the residents from their beds. No one responded and so they ran through the heavily smoky stairwell, banging on the flat doors and waking the residents. Thanks to their courageous intervention, all lives were saved.
Note for the media: In addition to those honoured, local resident Julian Deutschendorf and rescued residents of the house on Altendorfer Strasse will also be present.
