Art collector Alfred Gunzenhauser is dead
The city of Chemnitz has received the news that gallery owner and art collector Alfred Gunzenhauser died last Monday at the age of 89.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "Alfred Gunzenhauser was able to look back on a long and fulfilling life. His passion was art, his exquisite collection a visible expression of this passion, his life's theme. The unique collection of German and international art of the 20th century has found its place in our city, in Chemnitz.
With the museum named after the founder, a place has been created that will preserve Alfred Gunzenhauser's extraordinary collection for future generations beyond his lifetime. The art will continue to bear his name and the museum will always be a reminder of him. We mourn the loss of Alfred Gunzenhauser and remember him with gratitude."
The ceremonial opening of the Gunzenhauser Museum took place on 1 December 2007 in the presence of the then Federal President Horst Köhler. The collection of the Munich art dealer Dr Alfred Gunzenhauser, who helped shape German post-war art history, comprises 2,459 works by important 20th century artists. These include the world's largest collection of works by Otto Dix in public ownership as well as works by Felixmüller, Jawlensky, Kirchner, Münter, Beckmann, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Altenbourg, Schumacher, Nay, Baumeister, Warhol and other artists.
