Art and writing competition in the twin city of Akron: pupils from Chemnitz invited to take part
Competition on the topic of "Women in the Holocaust: Stories of loss, resistance and survival" in the categories of art, multimedia and writing for children and young people in grades 6 to 12
Children and young people from Chemnitz are cordially invited to take part in an art and writing competition organised in the US twin city of Akron: The challenging theme "Women in the Holocaust: Stories of Loss, Resistance and Survival" is to be reflected in the three categories of art, multimedia and writing (flyer). Children and young people in grades 6 to 8 and 9 to 12 are invited to take part in the competition, which is being organised in Akron for the 26th time. Each category is divided into two age groups, Group 1 for grades 6 to 8 and Group 2 for grades 9 to 12.
The suggestion to include Chemnitz and the Chemnitz pupils in the competition, which already has a long tradition in Akron in the US state of Ohio, came from Dr Ruth Röcher, Chairwoman of the Jewish Community of Chemnitz. During a visit to Akron together with five young people from the Chemnitz Jewish community, the conversation turned to the competition held in the twin city under the auspices of the Shaw JCC Jewish Community Centre and Donald L. Plusquellic, Mayor of Akron, immediately took up the idea of the guests from Chemnitz by inviting the children and young people of Chemnitz to take part in the competition and explained: "Informing our children about the horrors of the Holocaust should help to put an end to hatred and intolerance in our time.".
Conditions of participation: The conditions for taking part in the competition are published online at www.akronohio.gov/holocaust and will also be sent to Chemnitz secondary schools and grammar schools as well as independent schools in German (flyer). Deadline: Please submit your competition entries by Friday, 17 January 2014 to Chemnitz City Hall, Markt 1, Room 328 (Department of Protocol, Town Twinning), or by email to staedtepartnerschaften@stadt-chemnitz.de
The competition entries are expected in Akron at the end of January 2014. Before the Chemnitz entries go on their journey, they will be viewed here by a jury, which will award 1st to 4th place in each of the three categories and age groups. The jury team includes representatives of the Jewish Community of Chemnitz as well as the Mayor's Office and the Cultural Office of the City of Chemnitz. The 24 best works on the challenging topic selected in the pre-selection will be sent to Akron and will take part in the overall competition. All competition entries will be published on the City of Akron's website. The winning entries will be presented in an exhibition in Akron in April and May.
