Architecture Day on 27 and 28 June 2015
The motto of this year's nationwide Day of Architecture is "Architecture endures". Architects, landscape architects, interior designers and urban planners are also inviting visitors to Chemnitz to open the doors of many interesting buildings together with clients. They will be available to answer questions and provide insights into the work of the entire profession. In Saxony, the Day of Architecture has been a permanent fixture for interested visitors for almost 20 years. Private and public buildings, new buildings and conversions, interiors, gardens and open spaces are on display. Architects and planning offices are also open.
This year, the City of Chemnitz Green Space Office is also taking part in the Day of Architecture as a client. On 27 June at 11 a.m., visitors will be able to view Wilhelm-Külz-Platz and thus the reorganisation and careful integration of contemporary pathways in harmony with valuable existing trees. Wilhelm-Külz-Platz was laid out at the end of the 19th century as the characteristic Wilhelmsplatz, a town square from the Wilhelmszeit period. Some of the neighbouring buildings are now listed as historical monuments. The planners were faced with various problems when redeveloping the square: In the last century, the square was divided into two halves by the busy inner ring road. The remaining areas of the historic street space served as a disorganised car park. The plan was to restore the square's character as a town square and make it tangible as such. Ultimately, Wilhelm-Külz-Platz is a "thoroughfare" for pedestrians and cyclists that invites people to linger as a small park.
