Approval notice for ERDF funding
Chemnitz receives 11.3 million euros from the EU and the Free State of Saxony for integrated urban development
Many ideas were collected last year in the city districts, by project organisers and the administration and used to develop an integrated action plan for urban development funding from the ERDF and ESF (European Social Fund) until 2020. Following the city council's decision in July 2015, applications were submitted to the Free State of Bavaria for one ERDF area and two ESF areas in the two programmes for sustainable, integrated and social urban development. The ERDF funds have now been approved.
Now it is time to implement the ERDF projects, which concern several fields of action. For example, the implementation of the energy neighbourhood concept in southern Sonnenberg with the expansion of the district heating network and new control systems in schools by the municipal building management are planned in order to reduce CO2 emissions. The redesign of Campusplatz and Stadlerplatz will improve the connection to the future tram route between the university campuses.
In Altchemnitz, brownfield sites and buildings in the vicinity of Wilhelm-Raabe-Straße are being reutilised as commercial locations with the help of the funding, and an area manager is taking special care of these. There are similar goals in northern Sonnenberg for a start-up and creative centre and idea gardens, which were proposed there in the adopted framework plan.
Accessibility in public spaces is an important goal for the city. For example, access to the tunnel on Dresdner Strasse is to be improved and barriers on Brauhausstrasse in the vicinity of the many social facilities are to be removed. The new ReitbahnForum with Heim gGmbH will provide space for a neighbourhood canteen and integration rooms for the Annenschule. Caritas will soon be building 70 new daycare places on Sonnenberg. Throughout the ERDF area, small businesses can receive support from the CWE and the neighbourhood business manager as well as grants for their investments. The cultural and creative industries in the urban neighbourhoods are to receive special support.
These projects can receive 80 % grants from the ERDF.
The city is expecting a commitment from the ESF fund at the end of January 2016, when the investment projects can be usefully supplemented by a wide range of educational and employment measures.
