Apple exhibition at the environmental centre
On Saturday, 10 November 2018, an apple exhibition will take place from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Environmental Centre, Henriettenstraße 5. The State Working Group for Orchard Fruit of the Federal Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation will be showing numerous old and new apple varieties - in addition to tasting, there will be advice on growing apple varieties in the garden and a presentation of the Apple 2000 project at 2 pm. Admission is free.
The name of the Apple 2000 project refers to the approximately 2000 apple varieties known in Germany. The aim of the project is to plant as many of the 2000 varieties as possible in Chemnitz in order to contribute to the preservation of the genetic richness of the high diversity of varieties. Two trees per variety will be planted in the style of an orchard meadow. The environmental organisations NABU and BUND and the City of Chemnitz's Parks Department are currently working together on the project.
So far, 150 trees have already been planted in Hilbersdorf in 2016. Work has already begun on the next stage of the project. The cultivation of the apple varieties is based on an old European tradition in which every country in Europe has contributed varieties. Due to its European connection, the Apple 2000 project was registered as part of Chemnitz's bid to become European Capital of Culture 2025.
