Another section of the Lugau - Wüstenbrand footpath and cycle path completed ahead of schedule
Section 1 from Ursprung to Gewerbeallee Mittelbach will be opened on 14 June
On Thursday, 14 June 2018, another section of the footpath and cycle path between Lugau and Wüstenbrand will be opened for use six weeks ahead of schedule. The construction of the 2.50 m wide cycle and footpath was continued from the already usable section from the direction of Lugau from the crossing of the S 246 state road (Pflockenstraße) to Gewerbeallee in Mittelbach. The route continues along the former railway embankment. The length of the extension is 1,316 metres.
Clearing the construction site in particular proved to be very complex. The wild vegetation that had grown in the embankment area over decades had to be removed by the construction company and the construction site cleared of over 2,100 concrete sleepers. The existing and reusable track ballast was then processed and cleared of roots. An asphalt surface was then applied.
Construction work began in October 2017. The construction costs totalled around 310,000 euros. The Free State of Saxony is supporting the construction project with 90 per cent of the construction costs.
There are plans to complete a further section on the former railway embankment from Gewerbeallee to the city limits next year.
Asphalt Bau Chemnitz GmbH was commissioned to carry out the construction work.
