Another section of the Chemnitz Valley cycle path under construction
Start of construction on Monday (15 September) for section from Heinersdorfer Straße to Untere Hauptstraße Wittgensdorf
On Monday, 15 September, construction work will begin on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path from Heinersdorfer Straße to Untere Hauptstraße in the Wittgensdorf district. This also marks the start of the final construction phase of the Chemnitz Valley cycle path under the responsibility of the City of Chemnitz, for which the planning permission was granted by the Saxony State Directorate in April 2014.
The construction project includes the construction of the Chemnitz Valley cycle path over a length of 1.7 kilometres and the repair of two bridge structures. The route continues to run on the disused Chemnitz - Wechselburg railway line at a width of 2.50 metres.
There are two bridges in this section, over the drainage ditch of the Heinersdorf central sewage treatment plant and the Wittgensdorfer Bach stream. These structures are steel girder bridges whose supporting structures can still be used for the cycle/walking path and the bridge superstructure can be adapted to the use of the cycle path.
The railway line or the future Chemnitz Valley cycle path runs from Heinersdorfer Straße to approx. 100 metres before the bridge over the Wittgensdorfer Bach, i.e. over a length of approx. 1.1 kilometres in length, through the FFH area "Chemnitztal", which is part of the European protected area system "Natura 2000" in accordance with the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive. In order to safeguard environmentally relevant interests, the construction project is therefore subject to special boundary conditions, restrictions and special features. For example, construction work for species protection will be interrupted from March to July 2015 and ecological construction monitoring will be commissioned. Light-coloured surfaces will be installed, with concrete paving in the direct FFH area and asphalt paving with a lightened surface in the remaining area. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2015.
The company Gunter Hüttner & Co. GmbH from Chemnitz was commissioned with the realisation following a public tender. The construction volume amounts to around 800,000 euros. The project is being subsidised by the Free State of Saxony.
The further extension of the Chemnitz Valley cycle path in the direction of Wechselburg is the responsibility of the Free State through the State Office for Road Construction and Transport. The planning approval has already been granted for the subsequent section between Wittgensdorf and Markersdorf
