Announcement of the 20th Chemnitz Peace Prize 2023

The Chemnitz Peace Prize is being awarded for the 20th time. The Chemnitz Peace Prize is a civic award in which the citizens of the city choose the winners from among themselves.

Peace work is also remembrance work. A culture of remembrance, which manifests itself in a collective memory, is of fundamental importance for the peaceful coexistence of people.

The Chemnitz Peace Day has been part of the culture of remembrance for many years. Since 2002, the inhumane, hostile policies of fascist Germany, the victims of the war it unleashed and the destruction of Chemnitz in 1945 have been commemorated on 5 March. The aim is for the city's society to consciously address the issues of war and peace and the causes of the Second World War on this day.

Every year (with the exception of 2021 and 2022 due to the coronavirus), the Chemnitz Peace Prize is awarded shortly before 5 March. On 3 March 2023 for the 20th time.

The prize is awarded to individuals, organisations, projects and initiatives that

  • stand up for fundamental values such as tolerance and democracy,
  • consider the integration of different cultures to be an essential part of our coexistence
  • take a stand against all forms of marginalisation, xenophobia and racism
  • carry out active peace work,
  • promote and support non-violent coexistence.

It is important to the organisers - Bürgerverein FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. and the City of Chemnitz Migration Officer - that this commitment is sustainable.

The 1st prize and the only occasionally awarded honour prize for special services to peace in the city receive the sculpture "Chemnitz Peace Prize" by sculptor Erik Neukirchner. The winners also receive a cash prize (1st prize: 500 euros, 2nd prize: 300 euros and 3rd prize: 200 euros). The prize for children and young people and their projects is endowed with 300 euros.

All Chemnitz residents, associations and initiatives are hereby invited to nominate suitable people and projects. Self-applications are also possible. Proposals and applications should include a justification.
Members of the jury will examine the proposals, visit them and present them to the jury.
