Announcement of the 13th Chemnitz Peace Prize 2016
Invitation to participate until 15 January 2016
This is the 13th time that the Peace Prize has been awarded by the Citizens' Association Für Chemnitz in cooperation with the City of Chemnitz Crime Prevention Council and the Migration Commissioner.
Individuals, organisations, projects and initiatives can be honoured,
- that make a contribution to non-violent coexistence in Chemnitz,
- that avert violence,
- who promote a peaceful Chemnitz,
- promote and support the coexistence of different cultures in Chemnitz.
When Chemnitz was destroyed by bombs on 5 March 1945, it was the result of inhuman, hostile politics in Germany. The Chemnitz Peace Prize sees itself as an active contribution against xenophobia, anti-Semitism and incitement to hatred.
The prize consists of a sculpture by Chemnitz sculptor Erik Neukirchner and prize money. Three prizes are awarded, and an honorary prize can also be awarded for decades of work for a peaceful Chemnitz.
A civic, voluntary commitment is honoured in addition to the existing institutions whose duty it is to ensure social peace in Chemnitz. It is important to the jury that this commitment is designed to be sustainable. Jury members and projects in which jury members are involved cannot receive the award.
All Chemnitz residents, associations and initiatives are hereby invited to nominate suitable individuals and projects. Self-applications are also possible. Members of the jury will examine the proposals and present them to the jury. The closing date for applications is Friday, 15 January 2016.

In 2015, the Peace Prize was awarded to the citizens' initiative Aktion C, in 2014 to the intercultural garden e.V. and an honorary prize to the married couple Christina and Wolfgang Lehmann, in 2013 to the film project RECHTSzuHause and an honorary prize to Pedro Martin Montero Pérez. In 2012, the winners were the AG In- und Ausländer and Stephan Brenner as an honorary prize winner, in 2011 the association Miteinander statt Gegeneinander was awarded, an honorary prize was not awarded.
