Anniversary year "300 years of sustainability in Saxony" culminates in Chemnitz
The city of Chemnitz hosted the "People Shape Sustainability" event today. The event, which took place in the Chemnitz Opera House, was the highlight of the anniversary year "300 Years of Sustainability in Saxony", which is being jointly organised by the Saxon Hans-Carlowitz-Gesellschaft e.V. and the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture.
"Today, sustainability is more than just a guiding principle. In more and more areas of the economy and society, concrete measures are being taken to realise the principle of sustainability. The principle of sustainability is also being applied here in Chemnitz, in companies, in scientific institutions and also in urban development. I am therefore delighted that we are celebrating the highlight of the "300 years of sustainability in Saxony" anniversary year in Chemnitz with "People Shape Sustainability"," said Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
The winners of the inaugural Hans Carl von Carlowitz Prize, Prof. Dr Klaus Töpfer and Prof. Dr Kurt Biedenkopf, were among those honoured at the event. Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich and Bishop Jochen Bohl delivered the laudatory speeches.
In addition, a panel discussion on experiences and perspectives of sustainable action was held under the moderation of the Secretary General of the German Council for Sustainable Development, Dr Günther Bachmann. In addition to the two award winners, Minister of State Frank Kupfer, Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig and Dresden entrepreneur Sven Spielvogel also took part in the discussion.
There were also seven excursions to choose from, which gave an insight into how diverse sustainability is in Saxony's economy.
Hans Carl von Carlowitz, who was born in Oberrabenstein, laid the foundations for the idea of sustainability 300 years ago with his work "Sylvicultura Oeconomica".
