Animals from Chemnitz Zoo are part of a special species conservation project
A year ago, on 7 June 2022 to be precise, photographer Joel Sartore was in Chemnitz to take pictures of animals at Chemnitz Zoo for his "Photo Ark" project. These have now been added to his archive.
Of particular interest to Joel Sartore was the vivarium - a unique building in Europe for keeping amphibians. More than 80 species of amphibians are kept and bred in four rooms at different temperatures, a variety that can only be seen in a few places in the world. Sartore was able to photograph many rare species here. In addition to numerous amphibian species, three bird species from Chemnitz Zoo were included in the photo ark.
Sartore chose a neutral black or white background for each picture. The resulting images show the animals from an unusual close-up and appear very intimate. However, the images are not only intended to sensitise people to the beauty of nature, but also to the importance of biodiversity. The documentation of the various species is also intended to protect them from being forgotten.
Chemnitz Zoo is delighted to be working with Joel Sartore and National Geographic and is proud to be part of this project.
In addition, the photographs taken here can also be used by the zoo, e.g. for public relations work or signposting in the zoo.
Sartore launched the "Photo Ark" project in 2006 with the aim of photographing all 12,000 animal species currently in human care - i.e. in zoological institutions, sanctuaries and rescue centres. Sartore has already photographed more than 11,000 different animal species
