Animal park celebrates its 50th anniversary

"A kingdom for Frog & Co." - Spherical armadillo tries its hand at football oracle

Tierparkfest am 14. und 15. Juni / Heed Kreativbüro GmbH

Now the time has come - next weekend, 14 and 15 June, the anniversary animal park festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the zoo. The theme of this year's festival is "A Kingdom for Frogs & Co".

In the run-up to the festival, day-care centres and primary schools in Chemnitz were invited to be creative and make, paint, knead or glue a kingdom for the frog and his animal friends from the world of fairy tales. A jury has now assessed the creations submitted by a total of twelve organisations and selected the winners. The winners are the "Krabbelkäfer" daycare centre in Reichenhain and Reichenhain primary school. The award ceremony will take place at the zoo festival in the presence of Mayor Miko Runkel (14 June, 3 pm, stage). The creations themselves will also be on display at the zoo festival (as a photo).

Six fairy tale stations with "living" fairy tale characters spread throughout the zoo grounds invite visitors to join in. There will also be various information, craft, make-up and play stands throughout the zoo. There will be a stage, bouncy castle, carousel, climbing wall and catering on the festival meadow. The stage programme includes fairytale guessing games, dance and music performances as well as interviews with the zoo director and the zoo vet, among others.

Visitors who turn 50 on 14 or 15 June will receive free admission to the zoo festival with proof of age.

If you want to know more about the history of zoo animal husbandry in Chemnitz and about the zoo, you can purchase the anniversary publication "50 Jahre Tierpark Chemnitz" (k&d verlag, 4.90 euros) at the ticket office from the zoo festival weekend. This publication is also available in Chemnitz bookshops and at the city information centre.

On Sunday at 14:30, the southern armadillo (single, male, 1.5 years old, name: Flitz) from Chemnitz Zoo will try its hand at predicting the outcome of the Germany-Portugal match on 16 June. It is a close relative of the World Cup mascot, the northern armadillo or three-banded armadillo. Its population has declined sharply in recent years, mainly due to the destruction of its habitat.

Note for the media: the campaign takes place in the indoor enclosure, filming and photography is done from the visitors' room, space in front of the window is limited. The result of the "oracle" will be announced shortly afterwards on the Tierparkfest stage and can be obtained by dialling the Tierpark number at the ticket office.
