Angelina Jolie moves into Chemnitz Zoo
New residents moved into the rebuilt and expanded Kulan facility on 7 September. Two Kulan mares from Kolmarden Zoo in Sweden named Angelina Jolie (2) and Angel Dark (3) travelled south across the Baltic Sea in comfortable crates.
After they had had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the enclosure, stallion Flocke was allowed to join the new arrivals. After the initial somewhat stormy (but normal for coolies) attempts to get to know each other, calm has now returned. In addition to the group of three, two mares, including a daughter of the stallion Flocke, also live at the zoo.
Kulans have been kept and bred at the zoo since the 1970s. They belong to the half-donkey family and were once widespread across large parts of Asia, but today there are only small, dwindling remnant populations left. The zoo participates in the European Conservation Breeding Programme and around 30 young animals have already been born here.
