Former German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel signed the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book yesterday in the presence of Lord Mayor Sven Schulze. As part of her reading tour, she visited the European Capital of Culture 2025. In addition to visiting a bookshop, the former Chancellor wanted to see the former residence of the manufacturer Herbert Eugen Esche - the Villa Esche, built by Henry van de Velde.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze welcomed the former Chancellor there for her entry in the Golden Book. Simone Kalew, Managing Director of GGG, Dr Ralf Schulze, Managing Director of C3, and property manager Dr Andrea Pötzsch were also present.
At the end of the day, Angela Merkel read from her book "Freiheit" (Freedom) in the "Podium Villa Esche: Portraits & Contemporary History" series.
Angela Merkel was Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from November 2005 to December 2021. She was the first woman to hold this office, grew up in East Germany and was the first person to hold this office who was born after the Federal Republic of Germany was founded.
As Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel visited Chemnitz for the first time on 17 May 2009 for the Federal Conference of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief. She also signed the city's Golden Book at that time. A second visit took place on 16 November 2018. Among other things, she took part in a panel discussion and met the Niners basketball players.
