Amphibians – Wonders of Evolution

Museum of Natural History: Exhibition opening on 30 September, from 5 pm, TIETZ, 1st floor

On Wednesday 30 September, from 5 pm, anyone interested is invited to the opening of the exhibition ‘Amphibians – Wonders of Evolution’ at the Chemnitz Museum of Natural History, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. Palaeontologist Dr Ralf Werneburg, who was Director of the Bertholdsburg Castle Natural History Museum in Schleusingen from 1993 to 2024, will give the opening lecture. Admission is free.

The special exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the wondrous world of amphibians past and present, showcasing more than 70 exhibits, including original specimens, models and illustrations, as well as interactive stations.

Frogs and newts, damp meadows and forests, puddles full of tadpoles – these are the images we associate with amphibians. These animals fascinate us as travellers between worlds; they bridge the gap between life in water and life on land.

But amphibians are so much more: they evolved from fish almost 400 million years ago, were the first vertebrates to live on land, and were already enormously diverse during the Palaeozoic Era. The Mesozoic Era saw not only amphibians several metres in size, but also frogs that preyed on dinosaurs. Today, amphibians are found on almost every continent and have adapted to extreme habitats, such as cold steppes and scorching deserts.

The special exhibition can be seen at the Chemnitz Museum of Natural History until 30 September 2027.
