Am Südring indoor swimming pool to be renovated
City Council approves the application for funding from the federal programme "Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture"
At its meeting today, the City Council approved the City of Chemnitz's plans to completely refurbish the Am Südring indoor swimming pool. To make this possible, the city is applying for funding from the federal programme "Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture".
The estimated costs for the refurbishment of the Am Südring indoor swimming pool are around 7.7 million euros. Funding of around 5.8 million euros is being applied for from the federal programme "Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture".
The plan is to completely renovate the building envelope and roof to make them more energy efficient. The basement is also to be insulated and sealed for energy efficiency and the swimming pool and underground pipes are to be renewed. It is also planned to refurbish the swimming pool structure, the acoustics, electrical engineering and sound system and to upgrade the fire protection system. The pool water technology, ventilation, technical building equipment, measurement and control technology, electrical engineering, lightning protection, etc. are also to be modernised, as are parts of the outdoor facilities.
Most recently, maintenance work was carried out up until 2014: For example, the indoor swimming pool glazing (swimming pool only) was replaced with modern triple glazing. The chlorine granulate-based dosing technology was replaced in order to comply with current regulations. The men's and women's sanitary and shower units as well as the disabled WC were refurbished, including the pipework and shower control system. The cash desk system, the turnstile system and the heat distribution station have already been replaced.
The refurbishment measures are planned for the financial years 2025/2026 and 2027.
Funds totalling 400 million euros are available in the 2023 federal budget for the "Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture" programme to promote investment projects of particular social, regional or supra-regional importance. The projects should make a contribution to climate protection and have an above-average investment volume or high innovation potential. One of the funding priorities is the energy-efficient refurbishment of indoor swimming pools.
The planned refurbishment of the Am Südring indoor swimming pool fulfils the requirements for such funding. The indoor swimming pool is also an important infrastructure facility, a social meeting point for the population and is located in a district of a former GDR housing estate that has successfully undergone an extensive urban development transformation process in the past.
The corresponding application with project outline has already been submitted on time and with a good chance of success following the preliminary discussion in the administration and finance committee in September and subject to today's city council resolution.
