Against violence against women: Networks, help, prevention
Conference on International Women's Day, 8 March
The City of Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Women's Initiatives are organising the conference "Against Violence against Women: Networks, help, prevention" at the Mercure Hotel Kongress Chemnitz. The almost 100 participants will be welcomed by Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited.
Violence against women is a sad part of everyday life worldwide - including in Germany. According to the women's rights organisation Terre de femmes, one in four women here has been the victim of domestic violence at some point in her life, and one in seven has experienced rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.
Women experience violence at home, at work, in public and on the internet. The conference will address, among other things, the possibilities of prevention and specifically the help available for women affected in individual specialist forums.
What is special about this year's conference is that women from Chemnitz's partner cities will also be taking part and reporting on their experiences of violence in their communities.
The vice president of the Women's Federation and a trade unionist will be coming from Taiyuan (China), a representative of the Women's Congress and the city of Łódź's representative for women's affairs will be coming from Lodz (Poland), a city councillor has announced her attendance from Volgograd (Russia) and a member of the mayor's staff will be coming from Akron (USA). From Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic), women from the "Spirala" association, which has been cooperating with the Lila Villa Women's Centre for many years, will be attending.
On the evening before the conference, i.e. Monday 7 March 2016, there will be a meeting with the women from the partner cities at the Lila Villa Women's Centre from7pm to get to know each other.
