After complete refurbishment: Chemnitz school model moves to new premises on Stollberger Straße
The Chemnitz School Model (CSM) moved some of its pupils into its new home in Stollberger Straße today. Grades 5 to 10 started lessons in the completely renovated and refurbished school building on the first day after the winter holidays. Grades 1 to 4 will follow in the spring, when there will also be a ceremonial inauguration of the CSM at its new location.
"This marks the completion of one of the key school construction projects in our city. The pupils of the Chemnitz school model can finally learn under modern conditions. We can now look forward to the modern school location that the city council and administration jointly decided in favour of at the time," explains Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
The work on the former speech therapy school at Stollberger Straße 25 included the renovation and remodelling of the building, which was built in 1971, as well as the construction of an extension. The extension provides space for five classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a group room, the school library and the dining room. Another aim of the refurbishment is to make the school buildings barrier-free, for example by installing a lift for the disabled.
The refurbishment and remodelling of the existing building and the new extension were completed on time at the start of the second half of the school year. Only the outdoor facilities are still awaiting completion until the end of the winter. A total of 31 companies were involved in the construction work. The city of Chemnitz invested 6.38 million euros in the new school site.
The school and parents' representatives were involved in the development of the room layout and building design. In future, around 500 pupils in around 20 classes will attend the Chemnitz school model.
The move and the start of use will take place in two stages. Grades 5 to 10 have already been taught in the new building since this week. Grades 1 to 4 are expected to move into the building together with the after-school care centre in March/April.
The refurbishment on Stollberger Straße had become necessary because the building at Charlottenstraße 52 in Gablenz was in a very poor structural condition and the available space had become too small for the CSM. After the Free State of Bavaria refused to support the new building project on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße with funding, an alternative solution was found in the form of the building of the former speech therapy school. The decisive factors in choosing the building were its central location, good public transport connections and the large, green site.
